In addition, there will be play and craft activities, bubbles, African drumming, face painting, climbing frames and more!

“Not only is it a great day of free activities for families to enjoy and learn more about playgroups and why they are such a valuable resource – the event itself is set in a beautiful park location so families can spend some time together outdoors,” David said.

The World’s Biggest Playgroup Day is one of Playgroup WA’s most significant events with families coming from far and wide to enjoy the festivities!

September 6, 2016 - Playgroup WA celebrates Grandparents

It’s time to celebrate grandparents as Playgroup WA launches Bring a Grandparent to Playgroup Week on Monday 12 September.

The week-long event highlights the vital role grandparents play in family and community life.

Playgroup WA CEO David Zarb said the event has grown in popularity since it was first introduced in 2010.

“This week is about families with young children inviting a grandparent to come along to playgroup as their VIP guest,” David said.

“We think it’s really important to celebrate the role grandparents play in families and what this means for a more connected community.

“In fact, we now know more grandparents are actively caring for their grandchildren who might not even be aware that community playgroups are operating locally and keen for their involvement.”

Playgroup is a low cost activity for babies and children and a great way for adults to access community support.

Many little ones make their first friends at playgroup and an increasing number of adults say playgroup is where they first created their long-lasting family networks.

Playgroup WA promotes grandparents attending playgroups across the State – there are specific grandparent playgroups operating in North Perth, South Fremantle and Melville and loads of grandparents attending regular playgroup sessions in Perth as well as country locations.

Playgroup WA also encourages community playgroups to start spreading the word that grandparents are welcome at their playgroup.

There are playgroup vacancies across the State so if you’re looking to meet parents or grandparents in your area give Playgroup WA a call on 1800 171 882.

March 21, 2016 - Playgroups offer a great start to school

Latest research shows children who attend playgroup are better equipped to start school.

Playgroup WA CEO David Zarb endorsed findings released this week by the Telethon Kids Institute showing children who regularly attend playgroup are better prepared to start school. Being on average 1.78 times less likely to be considered vulnerable than children who did not go to playgroup. Importantly the research that children from all levels – advantaged and disadvantaged – benefitted from going to playgroup.

“This research – taken from the Australian Early Development Census – backs up what we’ve known for some time and shows how important playgroup is for children across all of the developmental domains measured from literacy and cognitive skills to social and emotional development,” David said.

He emphasized how important playgroups are for fostering early links to friendships and creativity and provide a great space for children to focus their natural tendencies towards learning through doing.

“Children use play to observe, explore, create and to negotiate rules and relationships,” David said. “They learn from one another and because parents and caregivers also participate, playgroup offers a wonderful setting where parents can build their own support networks in their local communities.

The research was launched to coincide with National Playgroup Week which began with a record breaking 15,000-strong crowd at Playgroup WA’s World’s Biggest Playgroup Day celebrations at Elizabeth Quay on Saturday.

At the March 19 event, Play School favourites took to the stage to entertain the crowd. A huge array of talented artists and performers were also on hand to bring the state’s latest hot spot to life much to the delight of the thousands of playgroup families who braved the weather to support Playgroup WA’s biggest promotional event to date.

“The celebrations were a great success and this coupled with the latest research from the Telethon Kids Institute really shows why community playgroups are such a valuable resource for families with young children and provide a rich return on investment from communities, government and the private sector,” David argued.

Playgroup WA has been supporting, servicing and establishing playgroups across WA for more than 40 years. For more information on playgroups, visit www.playgroupwa.com.au or call the Playgroup WA Hotline on 1800 171 882.

October 22, 2015 - Playgroup WA kicks off Craft It Competition

Playgroup WA, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to promoting and supporting playgroup participation opportunities for all families with young children, has launched its first-ever Craft It Competition.

The competition is open to all playgroups across the state and entrants are in the running to win some fabulous prizes.

“The craft boxes were produced from donations from our many playgroups’ Bubbler Deals purchases and when deciding how to best distribute the pooled funds, we searched for an idea that would engage all of our playgroups and the ‘Craft It’ competition resulted,” said Playgroup WA CEO David Zarb.

He hopes the competition creates awareness and conversations about the importance of imagination and creativity for young children.

“The Craft It competition has been set up to encourage and inspire our families to be creative at playgroup and at home with their children.”

Katrina McCarter from Bubbler Deals is delighted to work with Playgroup WA in offering the competition. “I want playgroup families feel inspired by the competition and the children are given full license to get creative,” she said.

Playgroups are invited to make something from their issued Craft Box and contents and upload a photo to the Playgroup WA Facebook page for public voting early December.

When the competition closes, the image with the most ‘likes’ will be named the overall winner and awarded a voucher for the top prize of $1000 to be used to purchase Toys, Craft Supplies or Furniture.

Playgroup WA will also announce four runner-up prizes of $500 vouchers each for the images that receive the next highest number of ‘likes’.

“I’m sure that the chance to take part in this competition will be a huge incentive for playgroups to get involved and have fun in the process,” David said. “We hope all playgroup families enjoy the Craft It competition but wish to remind parents that it’s the process of play that we encourage not the end product so please applaud the children’s efforts not the creative output.”

Competition information is available here: http://playgroupwa.com.au/CraftIt/

April 30, 2015 - Playgroup WA’s Rottnest Play Day - a Hit with Families

Playgroup WA’s Rottnest Wadjemup Nature Play Day attracted more than 200 hundred families to the idyllic island paradise yesterday (April 29) for a morning of nature-based activities.

Playgroup WA CEO David Zarb said the annual, autumn event encouraged families with young children to explore, discover and play with nature in one of the State’s most picturesque landscapes.

One of the participants said the smile never left her two-year old daughters face the entire day!

“From stepping on board the ferry to seeing a quokka for the first time and then playing in the sand – she just had a great time,” the mum of two said.

Highlights were the free activities for babies and children – aged 0 to 5 years – including water and sand play, physical play stations, story sessions and for older children the nature hunt and paperbark drawing.

“This is the third time we’ve held a nature-based play day on Rottnest Island and given the over-whelming public support we look forward to organizing the event again next year,” Mr Zarb said.

He also thanked the Rottnest Island Authority and ferry operator Rottnest Express for adding to the day’s success.

“I would like to sincerely thank everyone involved, including our event partners and all the Playgroup WA members who came along and helped to make the event such a success,” Mr Zarb said.

Rottnest Island Authority CEO Paolo Amaranti agreed the public had responded well to the event.

“We know families enjoy Rottnest Island year-round but events like this allow families with young children an opportunity to explore the island in a different way,” Mr Amaranti said.

Rottnest Express’ Director of Sales and Marketing Nicole Passarelli said working with Playgroup WA to encourage local families to visit Rottnest Island was fantastic.

“We’re also excited to announce that Playgroup WA members can now travel cheaper to Rottnest Island year round,” Ms Passarelli said.

Using their current Playgroup WA/ABC Baby Discount card, Playgroup WA members will receive 25% off Rottnest Express family ferry fares – same day return – when visiting Rottnest Island.

Monday, September 8, 2014 - New PlayConnect Group opens doors in Busselton

Playgroup WA invites parents and caregivers for a morning tea to celebrate the launch of the new PlayConnect Playgroup in Busselton on Thursday, 18 September 2014 at 9:30am at the Busselton Baptist Church Community Centre.

“Our facilitated PlayConnect Playgroups welcome children aged 0-6 years with Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD), developmental delays in communication and social skills and/or behavioural and sensory issues,” explained Playgroup WA’s Chief Executive Officer David Zarb.

“What’s really special about this program is that like community playgroups, parents and carers attend the weekly session with their child so play remains the focus while allowing families the opportunity to connect with others, share experiences and information to support one another.”

Siblings are encouraged to attend so families stay together and enjoy all of the wonderful benefits of playgroup in the one setting.

“Significant element of the PlayConnect program is that the playgroup is available to families awaiting a diagnosis or awaiting appointments for assessment,” Mr Zarb said.

This allows participation even during long waiting periods and support to families from a very early stage.

To attend a Play Connect Playgroup, no referral is required and children do not need a formal ASD diagnosis for families to join. “We know that sometimes families just need a way to connect with others travelling a similar road to feel energised and able to meet the demands of the day.”

Playgroup WA has been supporting, servicing and establishing playgroups throughout Western Australia since 1972. Playconnect is funded by the Australian Government’s Helping Children with Autism( HCWA) programme.

More information about the national program can be found on our PlayConnect page or by contacting Playgroup WA on 1800 171 882.

September 2, 2014 - Intergenerational Play Days hosted by Playgroup WA highlighting “Bring a Grandparent to Playgroup Week”

Kicking off “Bring a Grandparent to Playgroup Week”, Playgroup WA invites its statewide playgroups to bring grandparents or elderly friends to playgroup for some fun.

Highlighting this week are Play Days hosted by Playgroup WA, such as free
Intergenerational Play Days at Perth Zoo on September 2nd and at Claremont Museum on September 3rd. Activities include old fashioned games and hands on activities for all generations.

Intergenerational Playgroups provide seniors, young children and their parents and care givers with the opportunity to interact, be stimulated and have fun through play.
“Intergenerational playgroups link members of the community. A greater understanding of different generations is achieved, with everyone involved feeling a sense of inclusion.

Most importantly people become more connected with other members of their community.

Children interact with and learn to respect and value older people. Older people interact with and value the children, who create a lively hub of happiness at the intergenerational playgroups”, said David Zarb, Chief Executive Officer at Playgroup WA.

The Intergenerational Playgroup model adds a third generation to the mix.
Intergenerational Playgroups include Grandparent Playgroups, Aged Care Facility or
Nursing Home-based Playgroups and Retirement Village-based Playgroups and often meet at community centers, senior’s centers and aged care facilities.

Playgroup WA’s website hosted a variety of play ideas and interactive elements to enjoy
during this special week of welcoming the older generation.

For information about joining or starting an Intergenerational Playgroup please
contact Playgroup WA on 1800 171 882 or visit www.playgroupwa.com.au.
