Mud Pies
Kids love to play with mud, there’s something truly satisfying about squeezing it between your fingers.
What you need:
- Dirt or sand
- Water
- Cake trays/plates
- Things to decorate
Wet dirt/sand offers and entirely different texture for children. Dry sand pours with a fluid quality while wet sand compacts and moulds. Let the children experiment with sand and water, mixing them in different quantities. Provide plates or boards for the mud pies to dry on.
You can extend mud pie play by talking to the kids about what happens when the water evaporates, why do the pies start to crumble?
Extension Idea: Encourage vocabulary development by discussing concepts such as full, empty, more, less, heavy and light.
