Paint on Ice
This is a really fun activity and a great way to cool down. It’s also fun watching the colours mix as the ice melts!
What you need:
- Container lid (or something to freeze a thin layer of ice in, this becomes your canvas)
- Freezer
- Water
- Paints
- Paint brush
- Paint tray
Before you can paint on ice you need to prepare your icy canvas. Take a container lid or shallow bowl and fill it with water. Place it in the freezer for a few hours or until completely frozen. Set up a painting table with different coloured paint, brushes and water. We recommend laying down a plastic sheet to protect your table, this activity can get messy!
Once your table is ready call the kids over, it’s time to paint on ice! Take your pre-frozen ice canvases out of the freezer and give one to each child. Encourage them to paint on the ice like it was paper. As the ice melts the paint on the picture changes consistency and mixes into the ice and with the other colours.
Extension Idea: Try this activity using only prime colours, as they mix into each other new colours will start to appear. Talk to your child about how ice is made and what happens when it gets hot.
