Rainstick Bottles
A rainstick is a musical instrument that makes a sound similar to the gentle pitter-pat of rain falling when tipped from top to bottom.
Kids will love to watch and listen to the rice falling.
What you need:
- plastic water bottles
- sticks – various sizes works best
- Rice, beans (eg, pinto, garbanzo, lentil), seeds, sprinkles, sand, salt, sugar, rocks, etc. We usually use just rice.
- Bowls
- Scoops
- Funnel
- Insulation tape if you want to secure the lid
How to make:
- Remove labels from bottle. Wash & dry.
- Insert sticks into the bottle
- Scoop your chosen elements into the bottle (you may need the funnel) – you don’t need to fill it up too much
- Close lid tightly and secure with insulation tape if you like
- Give it to your child to play with!
Little things…this rainstick sensory bottle stimulates both the auditory and visual sensory systems. Tipping it up and down causes the rice to bounce off the sticks and makes a sound similar to rain falling (hence the name!). It can also help children to self-regulate.
