Salt Dough Recipe

Salt dough crafting is easy and lots of fun! And the end result is a lovely keepsake that will last forever.

You can use salt dough to make lots of creative things such as Christmas ornaments, Mothers Day gifts, Fathers Day gifts – and really, anything else you want!

What you need:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 cup of water
  • Rolling pin
  • Baking paper
  • Cookie cutters / knife

What you do:

Mix all ingredients together until it is soft and pliable. Adjust the recipe should you need to – if it’s too crumbly, add more water; if it’s too sticky, add more flour.

Roll out the dough and cut it into shapes using the cookie cutters or cut out a shape you want using a butter knife. Place the shapes onto baking paper.

Get your child to place their hand or foot into the dough and using a toothpick or the end of pencil, write their name and the date into the dough.

If you are using this as an ornament to hang, use a straw to push a hole through the top.

Put it into a pre-heated oven at 120c for 2 hours. If the dough is not set, put it in for longer.

Decorating

Salt dough creations looks great as they are but if you would like to decorate the finished product, use acrylic paint for best results. You can also use glue and glitter to give it a sparkly finish!
