Environmentally friendly alternatives to wrapping paper

Did you know that not all wrapping paper is recyclable? In Australia alone, the amount of wrapping paper waste is around 150,000kms – that’s enough to cover the world almost four times over!

If you’re looking at ways to help reduce wrapping paper waste this festive season, here are some great alternatives:

– Linen tea towels wrapped in twine
These don’t just look pretty but they serve as a secondary gift as well

– Newspapers
Extremely cost effective

– Fabric such as cut up sheets or pillow cases

Gift bags
Start buying neutral gift bags so that others can reuse them throughout the year

– Scarves wrapped in string
Again, these can act as a nice secondary gift too

– Santa sacks
Each family member can have their own special Santa sack that can be used yearly

– Cardboard boxes
Good option if your child enjoys having something to open

– Baskets
These look lovely and can serve many uses not just for gift giving, but for around the home

And lastly, if you do choose to use wrapping paper, always check that it’s recyclable!

Little things…Learning about sustainability starts with everyday practice. Babies and toddlers can begin by watching adults model these behaviours in the home.
